Reverend Thomas Michel, S.J
Reverend Thomas Michel, S.J., was born in St. Louis and ordained a Catholic priest of the St. Louis Archdiocese in 1967. He entered the Society of Jesus in Indonesia in 1969. Following Arabic and Islamic studies in Egypt and Lebanon, Fr. Michel received a doctorate in Islamic theology at the University of Chicago. In 1981 he was appointed to the Asia Desk of the Vatican Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, and in 1988 he became Head of the Office for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs of the Federation of Asian Bishops Conferences in Bangkok, Thailand. In 1996 Fr. Michel served as Secretary for Interreligious Dialogues in Rome and was Ecumenical Secretary for the Federation of Asian Bishops Conferences. Following his time as an International Visiting Fellow at Woodstock in 2008-9, Fr. Michel left Georgetown to work together with the Jesuit community in Ankara, Turkey, the only Catholic community working in that city. Fr. Michel serves in numerous institutions and organizations, including the Academic Council of the Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding at Georgetown University, the National Advisory board of the Khalidi Library in Jerusalem, and the Advisory Board of the Center for Civilizational Dialogue at the University of Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Fr. Michel is teaching in the theology department at Marquette in the fall, 2012, semester. His course is titled “Islam: Faith and Practice.”
Rev. Michel will deliver the Rev. Francis Wade, S.J., Public Lecture on Wednesday, September 19, 2012, at 4 o’clock PM in the Beaumier Suites of Raynor Libraries. The title of his talk is “A Catholic Priest Among Muslims: What I Have Learned.”
